Founder of the Vine Street Warehouse Vintage Kilo Sale Ian Borrow was inspired to organise the pay-as-you-weigh event after attending a similar sale in London and when a warehouse became available earlier called on his family to pitch in. Partner Jo Weeks helps to manage the pop-up alongside running Seven Dials’ gift boutique Sixty Seven, Ian’s daughter and Jo’s son are responsible for marketing and stocking the rails and with their friends have even hit the streets on roller skates to hand out flyers.

“We wanted to create a fun pop-up event that people would look forward to coming along to and having a rummage through the rails”, Jo says. “You don’t know what you will find and each month we buy in more stock to top up and to expand our range.”

The clothes are weighed and charged at £15 per kilo, so as a rough guide three flannel shirts weigh around one kilo (£15) and a pair of denim shorts 300g (£4.50).

Jo continues: “We have an eclectic mix of customers, as you would expect in Brighton, and each day is different. For example our morning customers on the first Saturday bought armfuls of dresses and later in the day the boys arrived and the flannel shirts and military jackets started to fly out.”

“One lady picked up five very different dresses and looked fab in them all – fortunately for her she didn’t have to make a choice as it only cost around £20 to take the lot!”

The next sale will be held on 25 and 26 June, from 9-6 on the Saturday and 10-5 Sunday. For future dates as they’re announced visit www.vinestreetwarehouse.co.uk.
