The Fairy Tale Fair’s Festive Fancies

1 November 2015 No Comment

Small Business Saturday encourages people to shop local in the run up to Christmas, this year falling on 5 December. And one of the small businesses at the heart of Brighton’s independent designer-maker scene – The Fairy Tale Fair – was last year chosen as one of the top 100 Small Businesses of the national campaign.

The Fairy Tale Fair, Brighton

So what’s happened since then and what can we look forward to from the local fairs this festive season? We caught up with founder Claire Montgomery for her picks of vintage-inspired traders at the upcoming events.

Speaking of last year’s accolade, Claire says: “Being part of the SmallBiz100 for 2014 was a great achievement. We were invited to Downing Street to celebrate with the other top 100 and were part of a small market on the street. It was a great, if slightly surreal, day and we met the Chancellor, Karren Brady from The Apprentice and lots of other lovely small business owners.

“The publicity has helped us to grow through 2015 and this season sees us holding more fairs then ever before.”

“It’s important to shop small where possible: As well as supporting local designers and makers you’re also buying one-off gifts that you won’t find on the high street. We make sure the fairs have everything from cards, stocking fillers and pocket-money buys to one of artworks, homewares and fashion.”

Brighton Open Market, 15 November

Over 40 talented local makers will be showing their wares from 10.30am – 4pm, alongside live Fifties-themed dancing at 1pm. And guests will be in good company as the organisers of Small Business UK are coming down from London to visit and film the fair.
