Who are you? Hi, I’m Laura Elizabeth Jordan, founder of Rags Revival Brighton.

What do you do? I host clothes swishing/swapping events around Brighton for women and children.

What does vintage mean to you? Growing up I worked a lot with vintage clothing in a fancy dress shop in Brighton and instantly loved it. It taught me it was OK to be different and not to follow the crowd and I really liked the idea of having something with history and a story behind it.

My boss was kind enough to give me some pieces that I fell in love with and from then I started charity shopping to get my vintage pieces and it just never ended! I really like that vintage is individual and can make you stand out from the crowd. I also like to be thrifty and with vintage pieces you can get quality garments and accessories, which will truly stand the test of time, for a great price.

How do you like to get dressed in the morning (and afternoon and evening)? If I’m dressing socially I like to mix up vintage and high street brands. Some short shorts and a vintage shirt. I’m loving vintage floral wrap skirts at the moment too!

I work as a private PA to a young disabled professional, doing 24-hour shifts, so when dressing for work I normally don my skinny jeans and a vintage shirt or jumper.

What’s your favourite decade for style? I love 1980s sequins and over-sized shirts as well as ‘40s/50s shirts/pencil skirts and a red lip. True glamour!

What’s your favourite vintage shop in Brighton (and the surrounding area)? I love charity shops and many have vintage sections now, and I could get happily lost in Snoopers Attic for hours!

What’s your favourite online vintage shop? I like getting vintage pieces from Ebay and Esty.

Where do you like to go to eat and drink yummy things in Brighton? My favourite place is Sabai Thai Restaurant on Princes Place. Fantastic food and a great atmosphere. I love a bit of spice!

What are your favourite vintage hangouts? I loved Judy’s Affordable Vintage Fair at the Open Market – I found a vintage 1960s orange paisley carpet bag which I wear so much!

Where do you like to go hunting for second-hand bargains? I like to go along London Road or George Street in Hove – both fab spots for charity shops and the odd vintage shop too!

What has been your best ever vintage/second-hand/charity shop find? I found a Jaeger camel coat in PDSA charity shop along London Road about a month ago for £10!

What is it about Brighton that makes you smile? It has to be how relaxed it is, especially in the North Laine and along the seafront in the summer. To see so much diversity being embraced is a wonderful thing. I am also a bit of a country girl as I have a 9-year-old Labradoodle so to have the countryside on our doorstep is a massive plus.

Any other hints, tips or recommendations for vintage-lovers in Brighton and beyond? I would say the thing with Rags Revival swishes is that people step out of their comfort zones more and try on styles that perhaps they wouldn’t normally. It’s a great way to vintage shop. Try different styles, colours and prints because you never know, something you thought would never suit you might just surprise you!
