Christine Macaulay - The Fabulous Times

Who are you? Christine Macaulay

What do you do? I edit online women’s lifestyle website The Fabulous Times and am a vintage-obsessed freelance fashion designer.

What does vintage mean to you? Coco Chanel famously said: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening”.

I guess for me the term vintage refers to what was going on pre-1980s. Vintage means not only clothing but music, advertising, street signs, photography, technology, economics, film, food and an attitude of a particular decade.

How do you like to get dressed in the morning (and afternoon and evening)? It all depends on what I’m doing day to day but I always strive to be comfortable. If it’s daytime a typical outfit would comprise of a 1950s vintage dress and cardigan, then for the evening maybe a cocktail dress or something slightly more formal.

What’s your favourite decade for style? I have a thing for all things 1940s/1950s America and Old Hollywood style, I love clothing designers Ceil Chapman and Alfred Shaheen, the rock ‘n’ roll music, Californian doo-wop and of course the cars!

What’s your favourite vintage shop in Brighton (and the surrounding area)? To Be Worn Again as you can occasionally find a cracking 1950s dress and the prices aren’t too way out.

What’s your favourite online vintage shop? I am in love with Adored Vintage – they’re at a slightly higher price point but the range is seriously swoon-worthy. I also really rate vintagevixen.com – they sell a mix of homewares and clothing and are super affordable.

JB's Diner - Brighton

Where do you like to go to eat and drink yummy things? JB’s American Diner – I’m a sucker for a great milkshake!

Where do you like to go to listen to awesome music? I tend to go to festivals to listen to music – my absolute favourites would be Viva Las Vegas, Rhythm Riot and Screamin’ Festival. I like to meet up with my best friends, as we don’t get to see each other anywhere nearl enough, and cram in three-days of rip-roaring music, laugher and shopping.

Have you been to any tip top vintage events of late? I went to the Yanks are back in Saddleworth’s WW2 weekender, over summer and also the Hot Rod Hayride, which were both heaps of fun.

What are your favourite vintage hangouts? My all-time favourite vintage hangout is The Cicada Club in Los Angeles! It’s the greatest place I’ve been to experience vintage style music and dancing.

Where do you like to go hunting for second-hand bargains? The second-hand markets on the North Laine are great.

What has been your best ever vintage/second-hand/charity shop find? I picked up a 1940s fur coat for £25 at Upper Gardner Street Saturday Market which was an incredible find.

Brighton beach

What is it about Brighton that makes you smile? The beach, eating red hot donuts on the pier on a winters day, the people, the array of boutique and vintage shops and the atmosphere. I’ve always loved Brighton!

Any other hints, tips or recommendations for vintage-lovers in Brighton and beyond? If you’re into 1950s Americana head to Los Angeles – it’s the Mecca for fashion, cars and music! The Rose Bowl is the greatest second market I’ve been to in the world, oh and be sure to go to The Way We Wore too.
