Bexhill & St. Leonards – day trip diary

11 August 2013 No Comment

One of the plus points in Brighton’s bumper book of brilliance is easy access from the city to delightful day trip destinations. An hour on the train and you’re in Bexhill-on-Sea, home to the Modernist masterpiece that is the De La Warr Pavilion. See what we got up to on our visit in this visual diary…

Breathtakingly beautiful, the Pavilion stretches out along the seafront, framing families in the fountains

There are plenty of seats from which to enjoy views out to sea and along the coast to Eastbourne

Not a bad lunch-time view from the gallery cafe balcony

Home smoked salmon nicoise salad and gourmet jacket potato with halloumi and ratatouille – yum!

In front of the Pavilion, an al fresco cafe continues the period feel with vintage furniture and crockery

Ice cream for dogs, vintage trunks and kitsch gifts are among the treats available under the arches

Even the rowing club maintains the sleek white lines of the seafront architecture

Maud's Vintage Clothing - Bexhill

As well as an abundance of charity shops – the majority on Western Road and Devonshire Road – Bexhill also boasts a number of vintage boutiques. From the station, head down Sea Road for homewares and fabrics, and for men’s and women’s clothing Mauds Emporium on St. Leonards Road is a must-visit.

Kings Road Antiques - St Leonards-on-Sea

A five minute train ride journey away and we hit upon another vintage-lovers’ playground. The streets of St Leonards-on-Sea are lined with charity shops the way charity shops used to be – full of vintage crockery and furniture for mere pounds. For hand-picked feature, foreign and collectible pieces at lower prices than you’d find in Brighton, Kinds Road Antiques is well worth a look.
