1960s Britons abroad by Basil Hyman

16 March 2013 No Comment

Glossy shots of glamorous Sixties culture are regular features on TV and in magazines, but unless you’re lucky enough to have a keen photographer in the family, candid images of life as it was lived by those out of the spotlight are harder to come by.

It’s these personal stories that Photographs Found: A Personal Memoir of 1960s Britain  (RRP £45) by Basil Hyman celebrates through a lovingly curated collection of images of the photographer’s family and friends and memorabilla from the time.

Following on from 2011’s The Lost Album, Britain in the 1950s, the book’s introduction sets the scene for the decade – through music, TV, fashion, politics and world affairs – and annotated images throughout the visual diary further explain what it was like to live in a decade characterised by dramatic cultural change.

Basil’s camera captured national events, such as Queen Elizabeth’s Coronation. But it’s in the images of everyday leisure pursuits, of which there were many to be enjoyed in the 1960s, that the book truly captures the imagination. Luxury cruises, foreign package holidays, stylish ski breaks, Spanish bull-fights, Disneyland, the John F. Kennedy Space Centre – these were places previously out of reach for the majority of Britons.

And the joy with which these new experiences were relished is infectious and the fashions inspirational. No dodgy shorts and ill-fitting bikinis here – in the 1960s they knew how to dress up for an event – and the act of getting on a plane was excuse enough.

Photos of home-grown occasions such as picnics, family holidays and even Basil’s wedding also help build up a picture of life and style at the time, with his cousin Brian Epstein captured not as the legendary Beatles manager as many remember him, but a much-loved family man.
